The enlightened bettor's guide
Four short lessons to understand what you are doing before staking a single euro.
Lesson I — Reading odds
Decimal odds express the total return of a winning bet: stake €10 at 2.50 and you receive €25 (a net gain of €15). Odds also translate into an implied probability: 1 divided by the odds. Odds of 2.50 therefore assume roughly a 40% chance of success, operator margin included. Comparing odds between licensed operators is the first reflex of the informed bettor.
Lesson II — Managing your bankroll
Set a leisure budget in advance — an amount whose total loss would change nothing in your life. Never stake more than 1 to 5% of that budget on a single bet, never chase your losses, and treat every stake as an entertainment expense, never as an investment. All ANJ-licensed operators offer deposit limits: use them.
Lesson III — Verifying an ANJ licence
In France, only operators licensed by the National Gaming Authority may legally offer online sports betting. A licensed site displays its status, applies identity verification, offers gambling-moderation tools, and its customer service is listed in the official ANJ register. Before signing up anywhere, verify the operator on anj.fr. If a brand is not listed there, walk away.
Lesson IV — Knowing your limits
Sports betting is entertainment whose long-run outcome is unfavourable to the player — that is mathematics, the operator's margin sees to it. Bet for the pleasure of the game, never to make a living. If the game stops being fun, visit our Responsible Gaming page: tools and people exist to help.
